SUSSEXES DON’T DESERVE AWARD

Posted on 26th November 2022

In 1969 I worked as a volunteer at the Charles Johnston Memorial Hospital, an Anglican Hospital in Natal, South Africa.  It was at the height of the apartheid regime.  I was exposed to its brutal realities.  The hospital was run by an extraordinary couple called Anthony and Maggie Barker.  They were true heroes.  The experience and what I learnt from it has stayed with me ever since.

In every sense it has given me a revulsion for institutional racism.  In this context I am utterly astonished, if not shocked, to find that self-entitled if not delusional pair, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, have been given a human rights award by the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Organisation.  It is called “The Ripple of Hope” award.  My hope is that this is called out for what is truly ludicrous and in all honesty debases the Kennedy name.  Also I think to accuse the monarchy of being racist is both insulting and unfair.  Nelson Mandela was very open about his admiration for the late Queen who as head of the Commonwealth did much to galvanise opposition to apartheid.  To level any such accusation at King Charles is equally absurd.  Just examine the good works he initiated as Prince of Wales through the Princes’ Trust.  If the self-entitled Harry and Megan had a modicum of sense, they would turn the award down saving themselves and the Kennedys a great deal of embarrassment.  Unfortunately there is not even a ripple of hope on that one.

So how is the re-election campaign for the delusional Donald Trump going ?  Well on Thursday a former magazine columnist E. Jean Carroll filed a law suit against Trump under a new law called The Adult Survivors Act.  It seems to hold him accountable for battery, for allegedly raping Carroll in the dressing room of a New York department store.  For good measure she is also suing Trump for defamation.  The former President is on record as saying “ I don’t know this woman, have no idea who she is”.  This is hardly good news breaking over Thanksgiving and jars with the telegenic family image projected by Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida, his chief rival.  Also unsettling for Trump and his supporters is the decision by the US Supreme Court to clear the way for the House Ways and Means Committee to get hold of the Donald’s tax returns.  This may lead to them being made public.  He has been fighting tooth and nail to avoid this and one has to wonder what he has got to hide.  Rather a lot I would think.  It is just possible that we are seeing the beginning of the end for Trump.  Now for that I would be truly thankful.

Finally, President Zelensky has pleaded to the UN Security  Council to take action against Russia as it is responsible for a “Crime against Humanity”.  We currently hold a seat.  Russia has a veto.  We should make waves regardless.  It is our duty.
