  • PEOPLE HAVE LOST FAITH IN INSTITUTIONS.

There is definitely a crisis of legitimacy in the Western World. During the last number of years it would not be inaccurate to say that it has become endemic. At the core of it seems to be two central issues most relevant to Ireland…

  • CONVICTION MAGGIE'S UNDOING

This week the news has been dominated by the death of Maggie Thatcher. Her funeral next week is called “Operation True Blue”. You might say that says it all, but the truth is that the Tory establishment was rocked to the core by Maggie the Shopkeeper’s daughter from Grantham.

  • GIVE IT TO US STRAIGHT TAOISEACH

Since Enda Kenny became Taoiseach he has met the Queen and President Obama and talked endlessly on his foreign travels about what a great little country Ireland is in which to conduct business. Michael Noonan, our Minister for Finance, has hailed the promissory note deal and a seven year extension on our bail-out funds as significant steps to lead us back to the markets.

  • BANK ON MOMENT OF TRUTH

I find myself in Paris this morning. The sun is shining. I am on my way to a wedding. All such things should make me feel good until I check the Irish news. Those damn banks. Didn’t we bail out the banks ?

  • MICHAEL D IS NOW OUR ONLY LEADER

I find myself in Paris this morning. The sun is shining. I am on my way to a wedding. All such things should make me feel good until I check the Irish news. Those damn banks. Didn’t we bail out the banks ?

  • HAS STATE PLAN B FOR EURO'S FALL ?

This has been an interesting week because two former big beasts in the European political jungle have come charging out of the undergrowth. I wonder whether the government has really taken notice so blinkered have they become by dancing to the Troika’s tune. First out of the blocks was Oskar Lafontaine, who was German Finance Minister at the launch of the euro.

  • BAD NEWS TAX IT OUT OF ALL OF US

I have been in the States this week, not too far from Boston College where the Taoiseach was given an Honorary Doctorate of Law. I hope it made him feel good in the face of the latest opinion poll which showed that 73% of people were dissatisfied with the government and the flak flying around as a result of the unbridled arrogance of the Minister for Justice.

  • SUN LIFTS THE SPIRIT DESPITE THE GLOOM OF PARTY POLITICS

Thank God this week the sun has been shining. Work has begun in earnest on the concert site at Slane. BON JOVI to kick off the summer, EMINEM as a finale. From “Livin’ on a Prayer” to “Slim Shady”. A summer of contrasts and colour. Maybe some optimism to cast aside the clouds of gloom.

  • ENDA'S ATTACK ON SEANAD IS VANDALISM OF CONSTITUTION.

Enda Kenny was elected to the Dail in 1975 in a bye-election caused by the death of his father. So it could be argued that he inherited his seat. He has been in the Dail so long that as well as being Taoiseach he is also father of the House. When he arrived at Leinster House all those years ago, people carried banners saying the West was awake. The question is, does this still ring true ?

  • TAOISEACH HAPPY TO AVOID TRUTH.

The sun has been shining this week. Personally speaking, I have been feeling a bit of an afterglow from BON JOVI’s stunning performance at Slane. On the surface things seem a bit rosier in the garden.
