This week I have had the saying “ low standards in high places” ringing in my ears. It is not just the tax affairs of the pink shirted Independent T.D. Michael Wallace that has induced this sensation, but the awful sinking feeling that not a whole lot has changed since the last election.

So, what a great week. It is pissing with rain and big Phil Hogan is living it up in Rio. The G20 meeting takes place in Mexico and is dominated by the crisis in the eurozone.

At times my mind travels back to the dark days of 1981, the year of the Hunger Strikes. There is a chapter in a book I wrote which was entitled “ Black Flags and Rock and Roll” which encapsulates those memories.
