Well I got through Hurricane Irene unscathed. Lots of trees down and power outages where I was in Massachusetts. It brought back memories of 2005 when I got stuck in Florida in the midst of Hurricane Wilma which turned the adjoining intercoastal into a giant overcharged Jacuzzi and I watched in astonishment as a brick flew by the window.
By now the initial feeling of intoxication felt by new Fine Gael T.D.’s must be waning.
For some reason this week I have images from the 1976 movie “Network” rattling around my brain. Peter Finch won an Academy Award for playing the demented T.V. anchor Howard Beale.
This has been a strange week. On Sunday night I had dinner with my wife in an Italian Restaurant in New York. We were just settling down for a quiet meal when suddenly the waiting staff burst into frenetic activity setting up and carefully scrutinising a table next door to us. In walked eight people of indeterminate nationality, accompanied by nine bodyguards all wearing wires.
So can we call the Presidential candidates “The Magnificent Seven” ? I don’t think so. More like an overdose of the ego has landed.
